Halloween is one of those holidays that everyone can enjoy. In fact, I’ll bet there are a lot of adults out there who like it even more than the kids walking around neighborhoods hoarding candy. I mean, who doesn’t like getting dressed up in a crazy costume and going to a party… or three?
Unfortunately, Halloween has become such big business that buying a costume at Target or one of those costume warehouses that pop up this time of year can take a huge chunk out of your wallet.
But you don’t have to make Halloween an exorbitant expense. Step away from the assembly line costumes of sexy nurses, sexy vampires and sexy pirates (hmm, I’m sensing a trend), and vow to put together your own costume this year!

And please note that I said “put together,” not “make” – no sewing involved in these costumes, just ingenuity. And there are lots of ways and places where you can find this ingenuity, like…
The Thrift Store.
Find some shabby, ill-fitting clothes and go as a bum. Like that tweed jacket with the patches for $5? Pair it with glasses or a pipe and you’re a professor. There are lots of potential costumes – for cheap! – just waiting for you at your local thrift store.
Uniforms and such.
Ever take a ballet class? Well, that old leotard can now be a costume – anything from (duh) dancer to cat or rabbit to even superhero with a few enhancements. And this applies for uniforms as well – for sports, jobs… anything!
Cardboard bonanza.
Got any old boxes lying around? Good news, you just found your Halloween costume. With a few simple boxes, you can become a robot, a jack-in-the-box, a Lego man (or woman), or any number of cool costumes. Be creative!

Prop it up… with wit.Speaking of creativity, there are probably dozens and dozens of potential costumes just lying around your house. Want to be a Sugar Mama (or Daddy)? Tape sugar cubes or packets to your clothes. Tape Smarties candies on your jeans, and suddenly you’re Smarty Pants. Got a hammer and a quarter? You’re a quarter pounder. Stab a cereal box with a fake knife and put some blood around it, and you’re a “cereal” killer.

Obviously, a lot of these are very silly, but that’s the point. If you just put a little bit of thought into it, you’re sure to find lots of cheap and easy costume ideas that your friends will love.
